Little by Little- Children

As a mother of six children, I am often asked… “how do you do it?” My first thought is, “a lot of prayer.” I don’t always say that though.

I wasn’t really sure how to answer the question. We just do it! As the phrase “little by little” kept appearing in my life I realized that was the answer…

“How do you do it?”

Little by little.”

We didn’t have six children all at once. We had one, then two, then three…

With each child we learned how to care for them, then how to care for two and three and so on. As the children came along the older children kept getting older and older. They had learned new skills, speech and responsibilities and they could now help and contribute to the family. So, as each little child grew bigger, they became able to help care for the new little ones and so on…

In the depths of parenting, I would use the phrase “little by little” to remind myself that this child will eventually sleep through the night, at some point this child won’t spit everything up or this child will be able to sit on the floor and play while I use the restroom.

It is also a phrase I use to remind myself that the children are learning and that takes time. That little by little they will learn to carry a cup without spilling, to put on their own shoes and learn to buckle their own seatbelt. It all takes time little by little they will slowly learn and develop new skills.

Little by little greatness will be achieved.
